Supercells intercepted NW of St. Joseph, Missouri
By James Hammett
Sunday, 07 June 2009
We got a late start and blasted toward our target of extreme northeast Kansas. By the time we got there a cell had formed northwest of our location and was tornado warned. We decided to hang around closer to Hiawatha, KS because there was a new cell going up nearby. We followed this cell for a while but it looked fairly disorganized and so we broke off to follow the cell to the northwest. It was still tornado warned but no tornadoes had been reported. As we got into position we saw the cell had obviously weakened and the cell we had just left looked like it was getting its act together. The next scan revealed a hook and it was now tornado warned. We followed this cell across an extremely narrow bridge on into Missouri. Lots of rotation and motion but it never produced a tornado. We heard a few pings of hail on the car but managed to stay out of the giant stuff. I'll be getting some images up soon.

New Criteria for Severe Thunderstorm Warnings goes into effect April 1
By James Hammett
Wednesday, 01 April 2009
The new hail-size criteria for severe thunderstorm warnings goes into effect today for NWS WFO's in the central region. The criteria now requires 1" hail - up from 3/4". This should cut down on the number of warnings for storms that don't affect life or property. Read more about it here: New One Inch Hail Criteria for Severe Thunderstorm Warnings

A NWS Des Moines damage survey confirmed that fast-moving storms produced one tornado (rated EF2) in Harrison County, Iowa near Missouri Valley and Magnolia and two tornadoes (rated EF0) in Montgomery County, Iowa near Villisca and Sciola / Viking Lake State Park on March 23, 2009. One house was destroyed but no one was home at the time.

NWS Tornado Summary March 23, 2009

We sat this day out - the 40-45mph storm motion would have been tough to keep up with.

Widespread severe event on Monday?
By James Hammett
Thursday, 19 March 2009

Models are pointing to a very dynamic system moving onto the plains on Monday. Shear looks great but lack of moisture, instability, and fast storm motions leave me questioning whether to chase, however. Typical dilemma with an early spring system. Low-topped supercells with hail and high winds are likely. The SPC has an area outlined in their Day 6 outlook including parts of Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas and mentions the possiblity of a fairly widespread severe event.
